ABOUT

ABOUT ME

I am Nguyễn Công Thành, or in the American style, Thanh (Cong) Nguyen. I am a Ph.D. student in Statistics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where I started in Fall 2025.

I am currently advised by Prof. Elizaveta (Liza) Levina. My research interests are broadly in statistical methods for complex and structured data, especially:

  • Latent structure models for networks and relational data
  • Hierarchical, multi-layer, and higher-order models for complex relational structures
  • Scalable, statistically grounded methods for learning hidden structure in large-scale data

I am particularly interested in developing methods that are both mathematically principled and computationally practical, with applications in neuroscience, imaging, financial networks, and other relational datasets.

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Fulbright University Vietnam. During my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to work under the guidance of Prof. Linh Tran at Fulbright University Vietnam and Prof. Hoi Nguyen at Ohio State University.

Before starting my Ph.D., I was also actively involved in Mathematical Olympiads, both as a competitor and as a coach.

ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

This website contains some standard information about my academic background, research, and projects. More importantly, I use it as a personal digital notebook: a place to record ideas, reflections, and occasional moments from life outside formal academic writing.

I hope to keep this space honest and informal, rather than turning it into only an academic showcase. That said, my Ph.D. journey will probably find its way into many of these pages.
